Ethics and AI with Dr. Kathryn Norlock: Part of the AI Hopes and Fears Speaker Series Online

Dr. Kathryn Norlock is the Associate Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences and a Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Trent University. An interdisciplinary scholar, Dr. Norlock is also affiliated faculty in the Department of Gender and Social Justice, and in the English Public Texts graduate program. She joined Trent University in 2010 as the Kenneth Mark Drain Chair in Ethics.

Dr. Norlock’s research in moral philosophy and ethical virtues focuses on the central notion of a relational self, informing her research in applied ethics including environmental ethics and teaching ethics.

Recent musings on the place of AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) in higher education appear on Dr. Norlock’s blog, where she situates her pedagogical practice in opposition to growing pressure to integrate this technology into teaching and learning. In Dr. Norlock’s words, she is “offering a counter-message to what lately seems like nonstop insistence that my pedagogical goals should include LLMs in one way or another.”

Join Dr. Norlock in an exploration of the ethical implications of artificial intelligence systems in the classroom and beyond.
